'Because It's 2015': Canadian Priminister Justin Trudeau Issued The Perfect Explanation Of His Equal Cabinet

Shortly after being sworn in as Canada's Prime Minister this week, Justin Trudeau has revealed his cabinet. And true to his campaign promise, he has selected a gender equal cabinet of 15 men and 15 women.

The second youngest person to be appointed with the role, his new cabinet reflects a commitment to reflecting Canada's diversity, as their portrait reflects.

The 43-year-old introduced his cabinet aptly explaining that “It’s important to be here before you today to present to Canada a cabinet that looks like Canada."

But what roused viewers the most was his answer to a reporter who asked about the reasons for his gender parity promise. He issued a perfectly succinct response, saying "Because it's 2015."

The new cabinet sees many of the female ministers in key roles. Chrystia Freeland, formerly a journalist, takes charge of international trade, while Maryam Monsef, who fled Afghanistan 20 years ago as a refugee, is tasked with overseeing the democratic reform portfolio.

While like the UK, Canada still has far to go before achieving full gender equality in politics, this is a strong start to Justin's lead and one that sets an example the world over.
