A couple in Canada have cancelled their upcoming wedding so that they can give the money to Syrian refugees resettling in Canada.
Samantha Jackson and Frazin Yousef had the wedding for 130 guests, totalling up to tens of thousands of dollars, booked for March. But they were so moved by the photograph of the three-year-old Syrian boy, Aylan Kurdi, found dead on a beach that they decided to give all their wedding funds to sponsor a Syrian family of four through the Ryerson University Lifeline Syria Challenge. Instead they got married at a reception at the City Hall in Toronto.
Samantha said to ABC News: "We were in the midst of wedding planning in September when that devastating photo of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi found on a beach came out. Like so many other people, we became acutely aware of how bad the situation was getting and how important it was to act and do something positive, so we cancelled the wedding and redirected the funds."
Mrs Jackson added: "Our family and friends were absolutely thrilled and supportive… and rather than giving the traditional gift, they made donations to help fund our sponsorship of a Syrian refugee family. Our wedding was perfect…and it was definitely the perfect way to start our marriage.”
