We just can’t get enough of our favourite royal couple, Wills and Kate, at the moment. Well, actually, if we’re being really honest, it’s mostly Kate. Her journey from Kate Middleton to Princess Catherine has been one full of incredible fashion outfits and occasions, so we’ve rounded up what we think is the definitive guide to her style, as well as the highlights that have gone hand in hand with becoming the Duchess of Cambridge and mum to the 3rd and 4th in line to the throne.
Birthday: 9th January 1982
Place of Birth: Reading
Family: Daughter of Carole and Michael Middleton, Sister to Pippa and James Middleton.
Education: St Andrews Pangbourne, Marlborough College, St. Andrews University.
There are some key milestones in Kate’s life that cannot be ignored; be warned, a great deal of heart melting goes on here.
Kate travelled to both Chile and Florence, Italy rather than the classic South East Asia Schlep. While in Florence she attended the British Institute, which William also went to that same year. However, they just missed each other and didn’t meet until…
Both Kate and Wills started at St Andrews in 2001, where Kate famously caught the Prince’s eye wearing a rather revealing dress at a student fashion show. It was auctioned off in 2011 for a snazzy £78,000. Of course their romance started on a runway… Both Wills and Kate Graduated with 2.1s, the clever clogs.
Kate and Will famously split after university, which Kate later stated (in their engagement interview of all places) that she ‘wasn’t very happy about it’. After the split she was pictured in slight more slinky outfits and regularly out in Chelsea. Kate also described this time as making her ‘stronger as a person’. Forget Britney, if Kate managed to get through 2007, you can get through today.
The announcement was made and the pics were released, with Kate looking every bit the Princess she was about to become - the hair, the dress, the ring, were all to die for. Diana’s engagement ring, William revealed in their first interview as a couple, was his way of keeping his mother as part of the proceedings. Our hearts melted for a second and then more importantly we all tried desperately to find that Issa Dress which the world obsessed over. Needless to say, it sold out in under a casual 24 hours.
We almost wept (we lie, we were bawling like babies) at the Royal Wedding as a whole, but no-one could keep their eyes off Kate in that amazing Alexander McQueen dress. Sarah Burton outdid herself with a dress that is still inspiring brides (here’s looking at you, Nikki Hilton…). Fun Fact: Did you know that she had a blue ribbon sewn inside her dress in keeping with wedding traditions?
Kate had to announce her pregnancy early because of suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, which in layman’s terms is severe morning sickness. But 9 months later Prince George came along and has been charming us since! The official pics of him are too cute for words (our heart melted again.)
We were back to the Lindo Wing earlier this year for the arrival of Princess Charlotte, resulting in some serious naming debates and possibly some of the sweetest family photos of all time. We can’t wait to see whether this little Princess will grow up to become such a style maven like her mother.
There have been whisperings that we could be on the look out for a new member of the Royal Family. Kate has always looked chic in maternity wear- not least because she is possibly the world’s tiniest pregnant lady we’ve ever seen. So now, we’re on bump watch for baby no. 3, even if it requires some binoculars…
We can’t deny our little glow of pride that the Duchess has become a bastion of British style; McQueen, Mulberry and Emilia Wickstead all make regular appearances with Kate, while she has definitely put Jenny Packham back on the map. We love how Kate can work the High street, with that yellow Reiss dress and some fab Hobbs pieces. We even picked up that her favourite jeans are from J Brand, showing that this Princess can work both smart and casual style. It’s all about simple lines and tailoring, a far cry from her head-to-toe tweed days (despite tweed making a comeback this season).
Kate’s wardrobe is worth watching more than ever before as her purchases pack some serious punch. She’s definitely reignited our interest for nude heels with her penchant for LK Bennett’s Sledge Nude Courts, which has resulted in the slightly cheaper equivalents from retailers like Asda (who have reported that their sales of nude heels have increased by 126%). Kate has even been crowned (get it?!) as the unofficial ambassador of Reiss, with all of her dress purchases selling out within a day of photos emerging. The most sought after was the cream number from her engagement photos, which caused the site to crash as so many people were trying to buy it! Her influence has meant that she can literally make a brand an example, like the ethical fashion label Beulah, whose co-founder Natasha Rufus Isaacs stated that Kate wearing the label ‘definitely helped spread the word about us and the cause that we support’.
The Kate Effect was certainly true for her maternity wardrobe. A royal favourite, the Coat Dress came into it's own for Kate when she wore a blue Seraphine coat that sold out in minutes after she was seen wearing it to a charity event. The cut perfectly emphasised Kate's pregnancy, but still slick.
Case and point was Kate’s first ever State Dinner, to which she wore a bespoke Jenny Packham dress. The designer has been a firm favourite of Kate’s for formal events, wearing one of her dresses to the Mandela Film Premiere. The Princess wore red to honour their guest, Chinese President Xi Jingping. The Tiara was a favourite of Princess Margarets, called the Lotus Flower Tiara. Needless to say, Kate’s clothes are as much a political statement as they are gorgeous.
Her clothes aren’t the only things that have made waves across the media, but Kate’s hair has also become a point of serious inspo. Blow Dry Bars have been trying to emulate her luscious locks, especially after her engagement photos were released. She also has been working chic chignons for formal events, completing her romantic looks. Recently she’s sparked the new hair trends such as the ‘gringe’ that even Ms Moss has been seen to be a copy-Kate of the Princess.
