Do Your Supermarket Shop AND Donate To Charity.... Here's How

02 April 2014 by

We've all heard of Fairtrade where money goes towards producers in developing countries but did you know there is now a growing number of products out there who donate a percentage of their profits to a charity associated with their brand? From helping Snow Leopards avoid extinction to encouraging collaboration and fostering reconciliation in the Middle East, it's nice to know that you’re doing good even when treating yourself. Here's our guide to the best three food & drinks brands below.

1. SNOW LEOPARD VODKA

THE PRODUCT: Described by the producers as 'A Spirit with a Soul', Snow Leopard vodka is made in Poland by Polmos Lublin, one the world's finest vodka distilleries. For over 100 years Polmos Lublin has been recognised for producing some of the best vodka due to its skill, experience and sophisticated distillation process. Snow Leopard is also the first luxury vodka made from the rare Spelt grain.

THE CAUSE: Research has estimated that less than 3,500 Snow Leopards remain in the wild and it is this company's mission to help this beautiful yet critically endangered species to avoid extinction. In addition this organisation strives to improve the livelihoods of the poor herder families who share their home range with this magnificent beast. 15% 0f profits go to Snow Leopard Conservation through the Snow Leopard Trust. Snow Leopard vodka can be bought here for £36.75 per 70cl bottle.

2. PEACE OIL

THE PRODUCT: Peace oil is made from the Suria variety of olives, grown in the foothills of the Carmel Mountains. Estate grown and bottled extra virgin single variety oil; the olives are rushed from the tree to the press, and are then cold pressed. 5 kilos of olives are required to produce just one litre of oil, and each olive tree can only produce around 3 to 4 litres of oil in total. Thats ALOT of olives!! A very fine tasting oil indeed.

THE CAUSE: Produced in Israel by Jews, Arabs, Druze and Bedouin working together. By helping develop and market products produced cooperatively Peace Oil hopes to encourage collaboration and foster reconciliation. Profits from it are given to the Charity Advisory Trust and are used to support peace work in the Middle East. The range can be viewed here and prices start from £9.95 per bottle.

3. ELEPHANT GIN

THE PRODUCT: An artisan London Dry Gin with an ethical cause at its heart which recently launched in the UK. Elephant Gin is inspired by the pioneering spirit of 19th century explorers in Africa and uses carefully selected rare African botanicals to create a distinctive flavour profile. Elephant Gin is produced in small batches using traditional copper still distillation and has 45% alcoholic volume. The taste is complex but strikingly smooth, encompassing floral, fruity and spicy flavours which can be enjoyed both straight and in a cocktail.

THE CAUSE: Every year more than 35,000 elephants die because of uncontrolled ivory poaching; in other words, one African elephant dies every 15 minutes. Elephant Gin and its founders are passionate about elephant conservation and strongly believe that the current generation has a responsibility to support the African wildlife of today, so others may continue to enjoy it in the future. By contributing 15% of its profits to Big Life Foundation and Space For Elephants, Elephant Gin takes an active part in supporting the foundations' activities.
