We’ve had Goji berries, quinoa, and chia seed… and now this week the latest Hollywood's food craze has been revealed… as the little-known grain called teff.
Apparently both Victoria Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow are big fans of the iron-rich Ethiopian grain, which is high in iron, calcium and protein and naturally gluten-free too. It is perfect healthy boost for those who are looking to do a low-carb, protein-rich diet, and is brilliant boost for hair, nails and skin.
Dubbed the 'new quinoa', this ancient grain is believed to hail as far back as 4000-1000 BC. It is as small as a poppy seed and, until recently, was used to feed animals. Nutrient-packed you can find it as a grain or as flour and it can be substituted for wheat flour in anything from bread and pasta to waffles and pizza bases.
But, the question is, what does it taste like? Apparently foodies say it is nutty and full of flavour, and according to blogger Kitchen Vignettes, it ‘makes the most delicious porridge’. Sceptics we may be, but we rather like the sound of her Teff Porridge With Apples, Dates and Pecans, below.
