It's Cold. It's January. You're Broke. Make Soup!

Oh gawd, we never learn… we've maxed out on our credit cards at Christmas and now we're having to live like Oliver Twist on 5p a day and eat Dickensian gruel as we count down the hours until payday.

Well, hang the gruel, what about soup instead? It is, after all, a classic waist-friendly staple and healthy, and low in fat.

Not rocket science, really, especially with the weather we've been having lately. Warm and comforting, soup is the ultimate January cure-all, a hug in a mug (or a bowl), plus it's cheap too.

Food writer Sophie Wright knows a thing or two about cooking on a budget. She has written a cookbook called Cook On A Shoestring full of brilliant purse-friendly recipes. This week she’s released a video master class of one her delicious recipes, Parnsip, Apple and Chestnut soup, below. And it looks delicious...

Now we love a gadget, and because we can’t resist a little retail window shopping even in January, we've decided to hunt down the best soup makers to buy now. Simply pop in the ingredients and at a flick of a switch, they’ll cook, whizz and blend a perfect soup for you - no faff, and minimal washing up. How darn clever is that?
