An Australian media personality and journalist, Sarah Wilson gave up sugar for life after suffering from an auto-immune disease and is certainly no stranger to the world of nutrition. As a qualified health professional with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York, Sarah identified something we all know, but don’t want to embrace: our excessive sugar consumption is bad for us and there are warning sirens of diabetes ringing out across a generation. So the former editor of Cosmopolitan magazine decided to write a recipe book filled with her delicious sugar free meals.
Sarah suffers from an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s Disease. This affects the thyroid mostly in women over 30 and some argue is actually caused by sugar. Sarah cut out sugar, in all forms, from her diet. She says, "Quitting sugar is a way of living without processed food and eating what our grandparents used to before the crappy food and the modern diseases. Today I’m still off the sugar, I’ve lost 25kg in weight, no longer have 3pm slumps and manage my disease much better."
In her new book, I Quit Sugar for Life, Sarah shows you how to live sugar-free forever. But if you don't want to go the whole hog and give sugar completely, she also has tips for you too. Sarah recommends no more than 5-9 teaspoons a day and has created an 8-week programme to detox and reset your body, so that eventually you won't suffer as many sugar cravings. Drawing on extensive research and her own tried and tested methods, Sarah has designed specific programs and recipes to help both families and solo cooks.
We were lucky enough to catch up with Sarah in the flesh for her to give us her top tips in going sugar free...
SARAH'S TOP 5 WAYS TO QUIT SUGAR FOR LIFE
1. AVOID FRUIT JUICE.
Sarah say's, "There are 9 - 10 teaspoons of sugar per glass and I recommend a daily limit of sugar of only 5 - 9 teaspoons PER DAY! Thats as much as a can of regular Cola."
2. AVOID LOW-FAT PRODUCTS.
Sarah tells us, "Producers of low-fat products remove the fat and actually replace it with sugar. Low-fat yoghurts could actually have as much as 6 teaspoons of sugar each!"
3. EAT MORE FAT AND PROTEIN.
Sarah say's, " Fat and Protein fills us up and will get your body rebalanced and burning the right kind of fuel. Cook with a little bit of butter, olive oil or even nut oils like macademia. Enjoy things like avocados, pork and chicken with the skin on, full-fat milk and eggs."
4. REPLACE CHOCOLATE WITH COCONUT OIL.
Sarah's tells us, "When you are having a craving for chocolate, treat yourself to a tablespoon of coconut oil. It's is sweet and due to its medium chain fatty acids can actually aid in weight loss as well as being great for your hair and nails." Sounds too good to be true to us!
5. DO MY 8 WEEK PROGRAMME.
Sarah says, "To really feel the benefits of a sugar free life you have to reset your body by not eating it for 8 weeks. You can lose weight, overcome cravings and find healthy sugar substitutions that will leave you feeling great."
