Hungry? Here's Our Low-Cal Lunch Charts!

14 January 2014 by

Calorie counting diets may not be for everyone, but after the festive period, many of us are wanting to eat better and feel a little less bloated.

But low-cal lunches taste like cardboard, right? Well not all of them do, or so we've found. We’ve spent the last few lunchtimes tasting and testing a selection of supermarket offerings and here our top eight favourites, available on any high street.

1. CRAYFISH & MANGO SALAD

Marks & Spencer Count On Us. (Stats: 275 calories, 3.8g fat, 0.35g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘The salad and crayfish were light and fresh and the coconut and chilli dressing not too spicy. We’d definitely have this again - and great as an accompaniment to a baked potato or crusty granary roll.’

2. ROASTED VEG & RICOTTA WRAP

From the Jamie Oliver range, available at Boots. (Stats: 377 calories, 11g fat, 1.6g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘Really filling and liked the ricotta wrap. For how many ingredients were involved we thought it would be much higher in calories, although it is higher in fat than the other lunches on our list.’

3. ROASTED VEG AND RED PEPPER FALAFEL SANDWICH

Marks & Spencer Count On Us. (Stats: 270 calories, 4.2g fat, 1.53g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘Filling. A great choice for veggies and the red onion bread wasn’t so strong that you would have to reach for the mints afterwards.’

4. SUPERFOOD WHOLEMEAL PASTA SALAD

Tesco Healthy living range. (Stats: 279 calories, 6.3g fat, 0.6g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘The pasta was well cooked and the broccoli was lovely. The lemon and yoghurt dressing worked really well with it too.’

5. CHICKEN & KING PRAWNS WITH THAI NOODLES

Sainsbury’s. (Stats: 267 calories, 5.0g fat, 1.37g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘A good balance of ingredients (not too much noodle to the chicken). The sauce is optional, which we liked.’

6. MOROCCAN COUSCOUS SALAD

Boots Shapers range. (Stats: 196 calories, 2.8g fat, 0.8g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘One of the more generous-sized portions that we tested, so this is great if you're hungry.’

7. MOROCCAN STYLE CHICKEN FLATBREAD

Boots Shapers range. (Stats: 288 calories, 2.2g fat, 0.56g salt.)

Our testers said: ‘Flatbreads are having a moment – and make a great alternative to a wrap. The chicken and couscous worked together well too.’

8. TASTE THE DIFFERENCE TOMATO AND MOZZARELLA SALAD

Sainsbury's. (Stats: 164 calories, 5.3g fat, 0.32g salt.)

‘Plenty of fresh salad and really juicy tomatoes: the basil dressing mixed in really well with the mozzarella. We couldn’t survive on just this for the whole day though. We’d have this with crackers or pumpernickel bread.’
