The British weather always makes it tricky when it comes to getting dressed. Will it rain? Will it be cold? Will I get all sweaty? But to be prepared for such bipolar weather, all you need is a jacket. Jackets mean you don't need to swamp your trendy ensemble - in fact, they can be the perfect finishing touch to a fashionable outfit underneath. Some may guffaw at covering up in the summer, but this is England and that means occasional and unexpected downpours in the middle of a heatwave so it's always best to be prepared. Need some inspiration? Then where better to look than the Spring Summer 2014 catwalks...
For starters, you can't go wrong with a chic blazer, whether you want to go bright and bold colours a la Armani or stick to a neutral colour palette as seen at Max Mara. We saw fitted variations from Antonio Berardi while blazers got oversized and more masculine at Saint Laurent. Or look to Blumarine who added a touch of colour with contrasting lapels.
Unsurprisingly, denim jackets are still the ideal go-to when it comes to a summer-appropriate look. They're great worn over a pretty frock dress or if you're brave, this is the way to to try some double denim. Ever inventive, Chanel adapted the traditional blue denim with an acid wash while Jean Paul Gaultier experimented with patches of leather and suede.
The biker jacket has always been, and will remain, an essential wardrobe staple. It was all over the Spring Summer 2014 catwalks, from Erdem and Louis Vuitton to Jean Paul Gaultier and John Richmond. It's perfect for nailing the rock chick look and instantly brings a dollop of edginess. We love Moschino's brightly coloured bikers while DKNY gave us some summery options with soft pastel shades and House of Holland experimented with white biker jackets.
Last but not least, we do love some sports luxe. Balmain's monochrome, padded sports jackets were worn with rolled-up sleeves and Richard Nicoll's soft palette of grey toned cover-ups make for a subtle but suitable summer option.
