Last night we wined and dined in celebration of the Scottish Fashion Awards. We were entertained by Laura Whitmore and sat with Scotland’s fashion fabulousness in its highest forms from Holly Fulton to Christopher Kane, surrounded by the antlers of Highland wildlife, enormous column candles and miles and miles of tartan.
SO we got to thinking… what with the reems of plaid we’ve spotted outside the shows and whizzed through on mammoth Street Style research hunts: checks are THE thing. Tartan, kilts, flannel shirts tied round waists, grungey printed silk slips a la Courtney Love and from heavy wools to pattern printed onto sensual sheer fabrics too, we are ready for a fling with the Highland print. It's no longer relegated to boarding school uniforms and weird naughty costumes, this new incarnation is super chic, touching on grunge and the ever-so-slightly kitsch for cool factor. See Saint Laurent, No.21, Junya Watanabe, Celine and Stella McCartney's autumn/winter collections to name-check (sorry) but a few.
And if you don't take a leaf from Scottish Designer of The Year Christopher Kane's latest collection, as Downton's Laura Carmichael and Laura Whitmore both did in his delicate velvet concoctions last night, the best update you can make is an injection of the perfectly autumnal print.
Perhaps Victoria Beckham in THAT Isabel Marant kilt is to blame or EVERY fashionista worth their buttons in those tartan patchwork Junya jeans, we can't be sure but Grazia HQ is abuzz with inspiration from the Scots.
We'll take ours with a side of haggis (we were sad not to see it on last night's menu).
