Espadrilles have long been a staple of our summer wardrobe. Stepping out in her chic espadrilles this week was the ever stylish Alexa Chung who worked the footwear look while shopping in New York. Her low key style – a peasant blouse matched with a navy A-line skirt – worked perfectly with the simple classic footwear, and provided a great advertisement for why espadrilles work so well for summer style.
This season the espadrille has had several updates. From flat to wedge; plain to print, lace up to slip on, there’s a pair for any style savvy shopper. The espadrille is one of the oldest shoes around, dating back to nearly 4000 years ago when the espadrille was once the chosen footwear for peasants; it wasn’t until the 1960’s when Mr Yves Saint Laurent asked for an espadrille with a heel that the style took a sophisticated redesign and reached new heights.

Espadrilles have had many iconic fashion moments over the decades. Take Grace Kelly in the opening scenes of ‘High Society’ wearing chinos and flat espadrilles or Sophia Loren who brought glamour to the espadrille when she was photographed for a glossy magazine in the 60s wearing a high heeled lace up style. The '80s saw another flat espadrille comeback after Don Johnson’s character in the film Miami Vice teamed his espadrilles with a suit. The most democratic of shoes, the espadrille has gone from peasant simplicity to high end glamour, and continues to appeal to the most stylish of summer stars.
