Shopping Fix: Rebellious Ashley Olsen Wears An Opinion-Dividing Kaftan On The Red Carpet

Ashley Olsen at the Veuve Clicquot Polo 2013

The fact that the Olsen twins never adhere to a strict dress code is something we really enjoy. Remember their very public refusal of the most recent Met Gala’s punk theme? Well, Ashley – the sister who is usually known for being the smarter, sleeker and more classic of the pair – has done it again. Taking to the normally ultra-feminine red carpet of the 6th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, an, erm, kaftan.

So as you can see from the pap shots, this is not your semi-sheer kind of chiffony kaftan you’d usually pack for your hols, but more of a North African djellaba. Originally djellabas are modest traditional gowns favoured by Berbers, but this kind of covered-up embroidered maxi was also appropriated by hippy chicks in 1970s. Which comes full circle – our Olsen girls often channel this decade.

We all know the designer siblings are both super-fans of wearing baggy and loose clothes for each and every occasion, and while this is undeniably shapeless, there’s something about the regal red hue and luxurious gold embroidery of this kaftan, plus her aviators, pulled-back ‘do, subtly revealing front-slit and glam flat sandals that have won us over this time.  There are plenty of kaftans available right now that you can wear beach-to-bar or day-to-night should you fancy taking a tip from Ashley. We’ve selected our favourites below, but are you ready for a rad new summer look?
