New York Fashion Week Coat Tribes: The Fash Pack Look Hot Even When It's Cold

12 February 2014 by

Over at New York Fashion Week the sidewalk is as important as the catwalk. There is an extra challenge for the fash pack this year, as the temperatures are icelandic. But a little snow isn't going to stop a FROW-er from appearing on the Satorialist. Spring Summer 2014 looks have been left on the rails, as they have had no option but to get layered. So how do you look hot when it's cold? We've broken down the 8 coat tribes from New York Fashion week below...

1. All white everything

Remember when J.Lo went for a walk in Maid in Manhattan in a Gucci white coat? One of these is a signal to the world that you've got dollar. The vibe is: 'A ketchup stain? Who cares? I've got 10 more of these at home.' Miroslava Duma is winning on the sidewalk in all white everything, except for her signature printed silk scarf of course.

2. Super furry animals

Thanks to the mercury dipping below freezing, street stylers have gone wild for shaggy beast-like coats. The general rule of thumb is: the bigger and brighter, the better. Above all else they are a great distraction from goose-pimpled legs.

3. Embroidered detailing

Taylor Tomasi-Hill and Miroslava Duma are the hottest street stylers around. What they say goes. This week they are championing the same Dries navy coat with pink embellishment.

4. Pretty in pink

The fash pack still have a sweet tooth, as the 'it' sugary pink coat isn't going anywhere soon. We heart Solange Knowles' pastel colour blocking coat she wore to the Marc by Marc show on Tuesday.

5. This coat was made for shoulder-robing

Arm holes are basically redundant at fashion week. The bigger the coat the better for shoulder-robing, so we've spotted plenty of oversized structured beauties in New York.

6. Let your coat do the talking

If you have to layer up, a jazzy coat can be the only way to make a bold statement. Our favourite is Alexa's metallic Marc by Marc number which she wore to the AW14 show. We spoke to Alexa about her look and she said: 'I'm inspired by a '60s dragonfly so I got a space age coat from Marc By Marc Jacobs. I was going to wear a dress but it's too cold and no matter how good that might look in a picture, I just can't do that to my kidneys.' A sensible move, we're sure you'll agree.

7. Primary colours

A paintbox coat is the perfect antidote to grey skies. Susie Bubble wore an orange furry number to the shows, while Solange wore a vibrant cobalt coat and Leandra Medine went for a sweeping brick red number.

8. LBC brigade (aka the little black coat)

But it's not all neon and metallics - the classic little black dress is also being championed by Alexa Chung, Victoria Beckham and Solange Knowles.
