VB + Manolo Blahnik = chic city mules [Lloyd Evans]

It was the big shoe news of the New York Fashion Week circuit last September when Victoria Beckham and Manolo Blahnik teamed up to give a joint stomp (or should that be clippity clop?) of approval to the long forgotten mule. Mr Blahnik proclaimed to GraziaDaily: ‘This is a shoe that’s never ever out of fashion. It’s an easy shoe. The courtesans used to have them, why? Even better they like mules.’

And so, since then this silhouette has steadily become an important part of the new season shoescape - notching up more editorial pages and placements on fashion eds' shopping lists than you can shake a popsock at. Some high street stores have cottoned onto the clip-clop class of the mule: Zara first and foremost, plus French connection, Aldo and LK Bennett. However, the trend is still most prominent in the upper echelons of fashiondom with almost every leading cordwainer cutting a fine shaped - and ultra-modern - mule for summer. Irina of Portable Package moves into mules territory [Rex, Portable Package]

So popular were they at fashion week that some dedicated FROW goers braved February's chill to wear them with - gasp! - bare ankles. Such a though isn't as daring today and we'd recommend getting started by looking up blogger Irina Lakicevic for inspiration - she's treating her mules like a regular pair of courts: as perfect with a swishy mermaid skirt and chunky knit as they are with ripped up denim.
