“A good pair of shoes can change any outfit,” said footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood to brilliant boutique Browns Fashion. Well, he would say that, he’s a shoe designer - but he does make a good point. If there’s one sure fire way to get your yourself onto every style blog going it’s via the most attention-seeking shoe you can find.
The statement shoe is an ingenious item for any wardrobe and its flashiness is exactly what makes it versatile. A poppy heel will turn an all-black, inconspicuous outfit into a ‘pap’-able one. And they are even more special when worn with a riot of colour and pattern, creating a total mish-mash look.
The other good news is that it’s not just about heels either - although we've found a trillion fabulous pairs. Fashionistas across the cities are swapping their stilettos for far more practical pairs of slippers, sneakers, preppy mannish loafers and tough-girl boots.

The key though, is the shoe’s ‘statement’: if it’s all black it must be oversized, over-buckled and oh-so-shiny. Flats must be printed, patterned and bright, bright, bright. Trainers are still a must-have; opt for bright sporty designs, the more bells, whistles and flashes the better. Another reason to invest in this trend is that it'll help you transition into summer – wear your boldest print strappy sandals with colour clashing socks. You'll be warm, with a spring in your step.
A bit of advice from Nicholas though – “Practice at home and not on the street. There’s nothing worse than seeing a girl waddling in shoes that she can’t walk in, looking like she’s had a heavy night without even touching a drink.” This may be true, but our Fendis look very good in the kitchen anyway.
