More room-dividing than track pants or scrunchies the knee-high gladiator is a guaranteed recipient of a solid trend-battering. It’s a sandal that has been present in each and every summer season for the past few years – never making it quite to the tipping point of a mass-moment purely thanks to it’s (sometimes) unforgiving nature.
Shoe designers who specialise in sexy also tend to specialise in a stonking good knee-high glad: think Jimmy Choo, Gianvito Rossi, Sophia Webster, Giuseppe Zanotti and more. You can even buy them on the high street; stores like Kurt Geiger or ASOS are providing safer, subtler options. However, the stamp of approval for this controversial piece of cordwainery may now have arrived courtesy of Nicolas Ghesquiere’s debut Cruise collection for Louis Vuitton.
The designer is only into his second season and already – like the Lego heels or Lariat bags of his Balenciaga past – these new hyper-glads are receiving hype by the Instagram truck-load from both the fashion people inside the show in Moanco as well as those who are deep in online shoe-perve. And it’s no wonder – this is the man who put them on the map when he created the interwoven lattice robotic styles at Balenciaga for Spring/Summer 2008. If anyone can make an extra-special pair of knee-high sandals, Nicolas can. With a graphic hand-painted floral wrapped into place by monochrome grosgrain and a closed-toe with a demi-heel, these shoes are outfit-makers – and strangely not tied to summer or winter, which makes them surprisingly versatile.

These styles won’t drop until November time (boo), but we noticed that Selena Gomez and Rita Ora have been fighting the good fight for this kind of summer strappy over the past few weeks, deeming them as suitable for down days as they are for the red carpet. And there are versions to be bought now should you not be able to hold yer horses. Scroll through the gallery below for our edit of the best today…
