It’s that time of year where the idea of party dressing either looms heavy in your conscious, or you can’t wait until Crimbo to crack out your best all-singing-all-dancing frock and stilettoes. Whichever camp your closet pledges their allegiance to, you may feel that sequins have been done to death.  Team Grazia felt the same way until Alexa Chung – who else? – reminded us yesterday in New York at a book signing, very much in the same way as Marc Jacobs often does via his catwalks, that these party fabrics can look very cool when dressed down.

In the wrong hands a sequinned skirt could look tacky, but in the deft ones of Miss Chung the result is nana-rave. Off-beat as ever, her chunky cable knit sweater and striped skirt – which both happen to be from Mr Jacobs resort 2014 line – also bring a unique spin to the classic black court and red lip formula.

Are there other ways to give any sequin a casual make-under? Yes. It’s simply all about the geek to glitz or fun to fuddy ratio. Revitalise a sequinned frock with nerdy brogues, for example. Or pair a sequinned top with grey woollen trousers. Pair a trophy jacket with a white tee and jeans. And so on…
