3 Easy Ways To Do 1970s Style Like Retro-Pro Florence Welch!

Florence Welch tweets a shot of her in Jamaica wearing a vintage-look kimono

With the Saint Laurent cemented as a quotidian part of spring summer’s style agenda (thanks to a powerful stream of high profile supporters and A-list studded campaigns), and the official start of the festival season signaled by hipster hangout Coachella, there’s a good chance that your fashion thoughts may be turning towards the ‘70s. After all, the most ubiquitous festival looks rely on a Woodstock hippy riff - and Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane has reinvented boho with spring's billowing chiffon maxis and those instantly recognisable wide-brimmed floppy hats.

But who does this retro look better than anyone outside of the actual decade? Miss Florence Welch, of course. Her stage attire may be dramatic, ethereal and often glitzy, but Flo’s off-duty style always nods back to the era of printed suits, platforms, shaggy fur coats and floaty midi dresses.

Master of the Machine has been a tad off radar recently, which is because she’s been jetting between recording studios in Jamaica and L.A. But, a rare glimpse here and there will reveal the retro Flo(w) is still going strong.

So, how does she not look like a fancy dress victim? We’ve deciphered 3 easy peasy ways to nail the 1970s...

1. Add a modern staple:

By wearing skinny jeans to a Vilshenko striped coat, pussy-bow blouse and floppy hat, Welch easily updates a vintage look.

2. Prep-up psychedelic prints:

Flo’s array of matchy-matchy printed tailoring from Miu Miu, Kenzo and Moschino step into the future because she’s wearing them buttoned up and with a boyish prep-ster vibe with loafers or smart white shirts.

3. Ground the look with black accessories:

There’s something softening and subtle about pairing up paisley prints, palazzo pants and silky shirts with strict black accessories.
