Marchesa's Fashion Evolution
Some looks betray an oriental influence with kimono sleeves or an obi belt, whereas other dresses mine the rich seam of 1940s glamour for inspiration. All are formal and unashamedly elegant. From satin jewel encrusted corset dresses to full-on millefeuille tulle confections to stiff sculptural creations designed never to be sat upon these pieces are occasion wear with a capital O. The company’s suitably regal namesake and muse, Marchesa Luisa Casati, is the noted eccentric European style icon and the two founders and designers are Brits in America, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig.
A red carpet dress is nothing without a VIP zipped into it, and Marchesa has a clientele befitting of such a Hollywood label. Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Weisz, Kerry Washington, Ali Larter, Sharon Stone, Bar Refaeli all wore Marchesa dresses in a single month in 2009.
British born Georgina and Keren met at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Georgina, a 2001 graduate of the Wimbledon School of Art, began her career as a costume designer. Keren graduated from Brighton Art College in 2000 and subsequently focused on print and embroidery design. Georgina’s draping and design expertise paired with Keren’s textile creations resulted in a business partnership and the establishment of the brand in 2004 that has gone on to conquer Hollywood.
