Marc by Marc Jacobs's Fashion Evolution
The diffusion line from America's most prolific designer showcases a particular species of hip New York style for his younger and perhaps slightly less affluent clientele. A favourite trick of the agenda setting designer is to appropriate an item hitherto considered unbearably passe and dreadful, for example the bumbag, the studded belt or the denim jacket and rework it into a desirable object (although never, in an ironic or pastiche way) for a new generation of male and female customers. Other trademarks include clashing prints, copious references to street style and of course his covetable accessories. A shrewd marketing move, as this allows his fans, even those on a budget to access his range by purchasing a belt, purse or gloves and thereby gaining membership into the MJ Club.
Jacobs introduced the secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, in SS 2001. He has gone on to win seven CFDA awards including Womenswear Designer of the Year, Accessories Designer of the Year and Menswear designer of the year. There are more than 100 stores worldwide.
Marc Jacobs was born in New York City in 1963. While a design student at Parsons School of Art and Design, Jacobs was the recipient of some of the schools highest honors including Design Student of the Year. In 1986 Jacobs designed his first collection with the Marc Jacobs label. In a series of events now classed as fashion legend, he became the youngest designer ever to be awarded the fashion industry’s highest tribute: The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent, soon after which he was appointed Vice-President of Women’s Design at Perry Ellis, from which he was unceremoniously sacked after presenting his fabled Grunge Collection. In 1992, the CFDA once again bestowed Jacobs with a distinct honour: the Women’s Designer of the Year Award for the very collection that had earned his dismissal.
Other press-worthy features of the designer include his obsession with fitness, his penchant for dressing up in his own collections in photoshoots to promote the brand, his multi coloured tattoos and his devotion to his pet dog. We would be SO bored without him and his collections.
