Basso and Brooke's Fashion Evolution

With their dazzling rainbow colour explosions, sheeny shiny fabrics, intricate prints and psychedelic pattern combinations, Brazilian born Bruno Basso and British Christopher Brooke have built up the brand from humble beginnings in a 'shop selling printed oven gloves' in Brixton and truly earned their reputation as the last word in 'Power Prints'. Although previous collections have experimented with various materials, outre shapes and tricks of scale, in recent years the line of the garments has become increasingly streamlined and slinky to better allow the prints to shine. Widely acknowleged to be the pioneers of the digital printing revolution, a technique that the younger generation of designers, Erdem, Marios Schwab and Christopher Kane have exploited well, the pair have been consistent in pushing this technology to its limits season on season, from geometric one minute to oriental-floral the next, to liquid, oil-on-water abstraction the next.

Basso and Brooke received their break in 2004 as the winners Fashion Fringe, the talent competition cum catwalk showcase founded by fashion critic extraordinaire Colin McDowell. Since then, they have become so established as to almost lend credibility to the award, rather than the other way round. The 2004 collection was sexually exuberant using beautiful, Liberty inspired prints that on closer inspection featured naked figures cavorting orgiastically, the kind of gimmick that does not always impress the critics, but in the duo's case was so well executed that it paid dividends.

CSM-trained womenswear designer Christopher Brooke has worked with Bruno Basso who was originally a graphic designer, art director and all-round creative to establish the brand since 2003. They have been part of the manufacturing group Aeffe, which is run by the Ferretti family since 2004. They continue to collaborate with Swarovski, Linda Farrow sunglasses and the milliner Stephen Jones on the collections. They are stocked by high-end department stores in London, Milan, Dallas, Hong Kong and Kuwait amongst others They have also made forays into the world of interiors, inlcuding a line of wallpaper sold exclusively in Harrods.
