Nicole Richie: Best Dresses & Outfits

Nicole Richie out and about in New York - March 2013

Nicole Richie's Fashion Evolution

Anyone who religiously watched hit US reality TV show The Simple Life back in the noughties will have a difficult time drawing parallels between the 'obnoxious midriff flashing best friend of Paris Hilton' Nicole Richie and the 'fashion designer and yummy mummy-of-two' Nicole Richie that we see on red carpets and front rows today. The daughter of All Night Long crooner Lionel has, in the words of international DJ Fatboy Slim 'come a long way, baby'.

Nowadays, Nicole is the darling of the fashion industry, with highly coveted off-duty style to boot. But how did she make the transition from trash to class we hear you ask? Well firstly following a five-year stint on the show the tiny star ditched the velour track pants and hooked up with LA-based mega stylist Rachel Zoe. The pair subsequently feuded before making up again, but Nicole has retained a look fairly close to Zoe's own personal style, focusing heavily on vintage pieces including 70s floor-length dresses, fedoras, oversized sunglasses and intricate jewels from designers including Halston, Linda Farrow, Missoni and Valentino. Nicole has since brought these retro elements into collections for her own brands, House of Harlow and Winter Kate – named after one of her daughters.

Although the overarching theme of Richie’s style is bohemian chic, the designer also experiments with rock ‘n’ roll and grunge, perhaps thanks to the influence of her hubby Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, who she married in 2010. Whether dressed down for a family day in LA or dressed up for a night out at an awards ceremony, Nicole has certainly achieved the impossible of leaving her dreaded 'reality star' title firmly in the past.
