Jason Wu

Jason Wu's Fashion Evolution

Jason Wu was only 26 when his name became known to millions of people for a few weeks in 2008 when it became synonymous with Obama fever. Being the designer responsible for Michele Obama’s dress on the night of her husbands inauguration not only pushed up Wu's own stock, it symbolised that Mrs Obama intended to take a fresh approach to First Ladyship. Whereas past  incumbents' wives would plump for established fashion houses (like Oscar de la Renta) Michele's chioce of an unknown, young American designer was significant in it's own right. That particular piece - a white one-shouldered gown is now neither in Wu’s own archives nor Obama’s wardrobe, whisked, as it was, straight into a museum following the event.

Famed for his perfect ball gowns and cocktail frocks, Taiwan-born Wu began sketching and making Barbie-sized outfits as a child, studied fashion design at Parsons in New York, worked on dolls' clothes for a while, as creative director of a toy company, and interned with Narciso Rodriguez before starting his own label. He counts Anna Wintour and Ivanka Trump as patrons as well as the First Lady. He recently cemented his status as a real American designer to watch by designing a mass-produced range for US giant, Target. Wu is known for his friendship with supermodel Karlie Kloss - who is known for getting ahead in the indsutry at a young age - and Wu even made her a dress for her high school prom.
