According to a new survey by youth charity vInspired young people between the age of 16-25 spend over £100 a month to recreate celebrity style and the reason they are doing so is simple: Instagram. Yes, the image sharing platform that gives us a glimpse into the lives of the glamorous and affluent, as well as our friends, family and colleagues has been cited as inspiring 'Insta-envy' in youngsters who look to the stars for guidance in what to wear.
The study, which involved 2,000 young people revealed that girls take their style cues from Alexa Chung, Cheryl Cole, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna and boys take the lead from David Beckham, Olly Murs, Ed Sheeran and Kanye West for fashion tips. While 47% admitted to splashing £100 each month on celebrity imitation wardrobes, 46% said they felt jealous when they looked through the social media accounts of their favourite fashion idols. The survey was undertaken as part of vInspired's Get Trashed campaign, which aims to encourage young people to get involved in clothes swapping parties to save over 10,000 items from landfill before February 2014.
While we may not quite fit into the age bracket of the survey, Insta-envy is certainly a feeling we can associate with. Who didn't see Victoria Beckham's shoe-valanche last week and think, if that's what she's (very generously) donating to the British Red Cross then how many pairs of shoes does she have in total? And how about when you see Alexa Chung with a new Chanel handbag or Rihanna in yet another bikini? It's difficult not to become a green-eyed monster.
