Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover of US Vogue is probably one of the most heatedly disputed magazine covers of all time. Last month, a source revealed that the issue was estimated to sell almost 500,000 copies, outselling previous issues featuring Beyoncé and America's First Lady Michelle Obama which sold 355,39 and 293,798 copies respectively. Oopsies! Turns out the source was off by a mere few hundred thousand copies.
New information from Mag Net Data - who use scan data from wholesalers that cover about 98 percent of the market - reveals the final sales figures for Kimye's cover will more likely come in at around the 250,000 mark. And that's including the stacks and stacks of the issue that Kim K apparently bought herself.
'The trends for Kim K. are definitely better than the prior month with Rihanna, to the tune of 20 percent better,' Josh Gary, vice president at Mag Net Data, told the New York Post. 'I'd argue that if you peg last year's Michelle Obama at 269,000, this issue will net out around 250,000.'
Barely 12 hours after the Vogue cover was revealed Twitter exploded in backlash. Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Twitter to say she's cancelling her Vogue subscription - yikes - while Bryan Boy tweeted, 'I'm gonna pretend I didn't see the cover of April 2014 issue of US Vogue.' Oh dear.
But as Anna Wintour says in her Editor’s Letter inside Kimye’s April issue, "...Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it." And no one can argue that Kim and Kanye aren't a massive part of today's culture - whether one may like it, or not. All hail the queen of the reinvention! Regardless of how many magazine covers she sold.
