Yay or Nay? Anne Hathaway Wears Tom Ford's Bondage Sandals At Les Miserables Premiere

We’re used to seeing Anne Hathaway in frothy Valentino and princess couture – even her wedding dress was candy pink tulle. But last night for the New York premiere of Les Miserables, she stepped out in a Gaga-esque Tom Ford black taffeta cape dress with a high thigh slit to show off a pair of risky knee high bondage boots. Yes, we are talking about the SAME Anne Hathaway.

So let's start with the shoes - bandage, leather and strappy. One remark overhead at Grazia HQ: "It's like a leg brace for a Victorian child." Ouch. The rest of us can't decide whether the Tom Ford gladiator sandals are daring and sexy or just totally wrong. As we reported back in September, Tom Ford's Spring Summer 2013 collection is filled with buckled straps, elastic harnesses and PVC pencil skirts, and we admit to quite liking that bondage edge. The thing is: we can't help thinking this look is way more Rihanna than Little Miss Hathaway, right?

Love it or loath it, this look is a far cry from the white pearl Givenchy couture gown Anne wore to the Les Mis premiere in London last week. So what's with this dramatic transformation? Anne has revealed that her hair cut has been influencing her style, saying: ‘I’m getting used to the cut now and I have completely fallen in love with collars. 'There isn’t a collared shirt that I don’t love right now and I like the last gentleman look more than ever, but I still like to go between mannish and super feminine styles’. Hmm, perhaps the pixie crop is making her channel her inner Ri-Ri?

Or could Anne be inspired by 50 shades of Grey? Bear with us here… WWD is reporting that the naughty novel has caused a rise in raunchy legwear. There has been a boost in hosiery, dominatrix style legwear, chains, studs and metal beads, apparently. French lingerie designer Chantal Thomass told WWD: 'I think there will be an impact, the same way as there was an impact of Sex and the City on lingerie, daring to do sexier pieces.' Meanwhile, La Perla creative director Giovanni Bianchi added: 'Regarding hosiery, the sexiest styles are always bestsellers, and I think that now we should focus even more on legwear collections featuring the same lace details and embroideries enriching our lingerie collections.'

Amanda Seyfried also went for a gothic, dramatic look at yesterday's NY premiere (although much less daring than Anne) in a gold bodice and black skirt Alexander McQueen gown with dark, smouldering eyes. As for newbie on the block Samantha Barks, she went for all out glamour in a slinky metallic Stella McCartney gown. Take a look through the gallery above to see all the looks from the red carpet and let us know if Anne's look is EEK or CHIC.

Sharlene Lowry Cook (Thu Dec 13 00:22:56 GMT 2012): Absolute nay. At first glance I thought she was wearing a calliper for an injured leg.
Becca Dunn (Thu Dec 13 16:02:51 GMT 2012): Ahahaha! "a leg brace for a Victorian child..." She looks like she's wearing some sort of lower-body straight jacket!x
