Looking at Winona Ryder's latest magazine cover, a photoshoot by renowned snapper Mario Testino for V Magazine, it's hard to believe she's been a cinematic icon for four decades. The now 42-year-old appears as wide-eyed and elfin as she did in Tim Burton's 1988 masterpiece Beetlejuice, the film that set her path for success. In her latest movie, Homefront, she appears alongside James Franco and Jason Statham as a former biker gang member who runs a drug operation.

It's a far cry from her early roles, although as the powerful shoot reminds us, it perhaps required her to wear as much black leather. When we think Winona, 90s Goth-grunge, Johnny Depp in a vintage biker jacket, teenage angst, celebrity court cases and regrettable tattoos all spring to mind, but so does a body of work that far surpasses the tabloid tittle-tattle. Lest we forget that Ryder is an Academy Award nominated actress with classics such as Little Women, Girl, Interrupted and Heathers under her belt. After early success, high profile relationships and legal troubles, the star has weathered the showbiz storm and now picks and chooses her roles, preferring to stay out of the spotlight, as her friend, designer Marc Jacobs noted to V Magazine: "I remember we had a show in L.A. and there was such a ruckus when she arrived, the photographers were so enthralled. I asked someone, ‘Why is everybody freaking out?’ And they said it’s because she rarely goes out. She’s a bit of an enigma. She’s an incredibly present actress. I think of her as being very strong, but there is also that private side."

Winona confirmed her pursuit of a low-key life, “Now there’s a constant conversation of how you have to keep working in order to remind people that you’re around. You have to work to be relevant. If you don’t then people will forget and the studios won’t want you because they won’t remember the last thing you did that made money. It’s all about knowing when to listen to that conversation and—without sounding really hokey—when to tune it out and follow your heart."

But what of the inheritors of her indie starlet crown? The Jennifer Lawrences and Kristen Stewarts of the current generation of film femmes haven't escaped Ryder's attention. She revealed, “I was recently asked about Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence,” she recalls. “In answering I was very genuine, and I did say I thought they were both incredibly talented. But I mentioned something about their privacy and how my heart goes out to them, and the feedback I got was like, ‘How dare she!’ It’s just another example of something being taken out of context, the interpretation was that I pitied them or something. I guess people decide to take things a certain way for headlines or Internet hits. But these are great actresses! I don’t know what they think of me. I would never give advice because I would feel very presumptuous. Their success is very different than mine was, and it’s a different time.”

Honesty is just one of the reasons why we love Winona - check out a few more below...
