William Tempest Reveals His Pyjamas For W London & Reveals Why Kate Middleton Should Support Young British Designers

Grazia Daily caught up with young British designer William Tempest in a hotel suite in the W London to chat about what to wear for bed. Why? Well he has teamed up with the London hotel to design a set of limited edition PJs for hotel guests staying in the WOW suites and it will also be available in the W store.

As we sat on the hotel bed with William doing a Marc Jacobs wearing his silks in the day, we talked to him about his inspiration for the pyjamas, why he loves Kristen Stewart and why Kate Middleton should show more support for young British designers. Read the top 10 things we found out from our chat with Mr Tempest below...

1. He thinks Kate Middleton should support young British designers...

'I think it’s great that she is sticking to British designers but they’re all big names like Mulberry and McQueen. It would be great if she supported younger British designers because she could and it would make a huge difference to them. She has the power to do that. It would be a risk for her to take but I think it’s one that she should take. I don’t think that she is brave enough - obviously because she’s now part of the Royal Family there’s all the protocol she has to follow and she is going to stay in line. If she met some young designers, then I think that she could potentially.'

2. He was inspired by traditional British pyjamas for his W Hotel range...

'I wanted it to be like a traditional British pyjama, with an almost tailored jacket. Obviously British pyjamas are usually pin-striped but I wanted to do my own take on that, so I took the pin-striped idea but put my own twist on it. So the stripes interlock and weave in and out of each other but then they actually form a W emblem, which could be for William Tempest or it could be for W Hotels. I looked at old traditional British pyjamas. Because London is the centre for menswear, it’s where the tailored suit started and so I looked at pictures of vintage pyjamas.'

3. He would love to dress Kristen Stewart...

'I would love to dress Kristen Stewart for the red carpet - I'm like in love with her. I really like that she has a bit of an edge, but that she can really do red carpet as well. That’s what I’m known for, red carpet effortless glamour.'

4. He is doing another high street collaboration - but won't say who with...

'At the moment I’m working on another high street collaboration. I can’t say who it is for but it will be a high street collection, with as many pieces as my River Island collaboration, probably out later in the year.'

5. His favourite person he's ever dressed is Emma Watson...

'My favourite person I've dressed has to be Emma Watson because it was when I first started my label. It took me from a graduate to being known and people actually wanting to work with me. It was to a premiere of the first film she did after Harry Potter and for her to support a young British designer was an amazing thing so I think that that’s one thing that has helped me.'

6. His friends are his inspiration...

'I like to meet up with my friends because that’s where I get most of my inspiration from. It’s just a really great way to relate to your client base and people that are wearing your clothes.'

7. He is a fan of the '90s revival...

'I try and follow fashion but I keep my own style quite classic and then just dip in and out of current fashion trends. But I like the whole 90s revival, I guess that’s because I’m a child of the 90s. It's interesting that you can now define it as a decade but you couldn't do that a while ago - but then it becomes its own and gets stamped.'

8. He would love to style Angelina Jolie...

'Not a dress with a thigh high split, but definitely something very stripped back, elegant and simple because I think that’s when she looks her best. I'd put her in something very, very classic and timeless.'

9. London is his favourite place in the world...

'Everyone looks to London to see what’s happening in fashion and music and I don’t think there is any place like it in the world. In the last two years I've split my time between Dubai and London and having that experience of travelling to different countries has made me think about London completely differently. I now get so excited when I'm coming back. It's one of the only places where trends start and go up to the catwalk. London is my favourite city in the world.'

10. One of his designs was once burnt minutes before hitting the catwalk...

'At my Fashion Fringe show one of the seamstress backstage burnt a dress with an iron. The fabric was quite delicate and it had an iron stamp on it at the bottom, so that was an OH MY GOD moment. But we still put it in the show because when the model walked the fabric moved and it was reflective so you couldn’t really notice. It's predictable that things are going to go wrong. So much has to come together at the same time that it is inevitable that something is going to crack.'

William Tempest has teamed up with W London – Leicester Square to produce a limited edition pyjama set, available to guests in the hotel's E WOW and WOW Suites and in W The Store from 1st June. For more information please go to www.wlondon.co.uk
