While we might be in the midst of summer (admittedly the weather isn’t exactly cooperating), fashion week is but weeks away. With designers already beavering away at their collections and seating plans already in process, there’s no escaping the new season. Kicking off the month of fashion madness, New York Fashion Week is already looking pretty exciting. 1. Spike Jonze and Joanh Hill Are Staging a Play for Opening Ceremony
Instead of presenting a regular catwalk show, Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim will be showcasing a one-act play written by Jonah Hill and directed by Oscar winning director Spike Jonze. The brand has worked before with Jonze, designing collections inspired by his films Her and Where the Wild Things Are, but this will mark their first ever fashion week collaboration. A must-see for sure.
2. Fit Freaks Rejoice: Athleta Hits the Runway
Gap’s fitness branch Athleta is hitting New York Fashion Week reflecting the industry’s embrace of gym kit as daywear. The show will bring together yogis, dancers and parkour runners in a fast paced performance entitled Crush of Adrenaline and will be put together by Beyonce’s choreographer. Major!
3. Our New York Fashion Week FROW Faves
From Olivia Palermo to Leandra Medine to Lauren Santo Domingo, New York has its fair share of fashion forward folk. 4. Gareth Pugh’s ‘Immersive Live Experience’
Moving his catwalk show to New York from Paris where he as shown for the past six years, the Brit enfant terrible is promising a proper extravaganza involving live dancers and video. The immersive live performance will be sponsored by Lexus and will surely shake up the identikit NYFW schedule.
5. Ralph Lauren Polo Launch
To celebrate the opening of Ralph’s flagship Polo only store on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, the brand will be reveling in all things Polo. With Bruce Weber shooting the A/W 2014 campaign you can expect a host of bohemian knits and brightly coloured parkas coming to your instagram stream soon.
6. Gwen Stefani Returns to the NYFW Schedule
Gwen’s urban/Harijuku style mash up collection L.A.M.B hasn’t been seen on the calendar for several seasons but as she let on to US Elle earlier in the year, the brand will be presenting for Spring/Summer 2015. As she explains: ‘I am going to do some sort of presentation or show this September. The only reason I haven’t lately is because it falls when my kids go back to school and I was like, ‘Oh, I guess I will go to NYFW and miss my kid’s first day of kindergarten.’ No. This year it falls on a different week so I can be in both places.’ Welcome back Gwen!
7. Stiletto Ban
While we’ve typically been excited to see the new heels on the FROW, this season its all going to be about the sidewalk sneaker. From high end to sports labels, trainers are set to be the fash pack go-to more than ever this season.
8. Fashion Incubator
The CFDA – Council of Fashion Designers of America continue to support a roster of upcoming talent – see the full list [a target="_blank" href="http://cfda.com/programs/cfda-fashion-incubator">here[/a]. In addition emerging brands including M.PATMOS and Public School have both won substantial investment from the Woolmark prize – ones to watch for the coming season. While London still reigns supreme as the centre of emerging design, New York doing its darndest to catch up.
