Cannes Film Festival 2014 kicks off today! We're expecting the likes of Nicole Kidman, Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes and Kristen Stewart to hit the red carpet in France over the next couple of weeks, alongside Jessica Chastain, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Marion Cotillard. Wowza.

In order to prepare for what's sure to be a fortnight of film, fashion and mega-watt glamour, it's time to get clued up on the most memorable dresses ever sported at the event. Ever wondered if there's a formula to a killer red carpet look? Maybe you want to know if there's a colour that's perfect for the French sunshine? We've done the hard work for you.

Our friends over at Mediarun Digital have created an awesome infographic showing every stand-out dress ever sported at the festival - and it's beautiful! The illustrated guide to the gowns starts with Bridget Bardot's floaty white number from 1953 and runs all the way up to Nicole Kidman's floral 50s-inspired Christian Dior look from 2013.

Quirky inclusions include Madonna's matching bra-let and bloomer combo from 1991. There's Vanessa Redgrave's spotted shift and matching tights from 1967 and Sharon Stone's frock from 1995 which was split to reveal her bathing suit underneath.

The iconic festival's been luring in the world's most stylish Hollywood stars since 1946, so the retro looks included in the infographic are all-out amazing.  Grace Kelly's ruby number from 1955 is spectacular, plus there's looks from Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and Mia Farrow included. Phew! That's a whole lotta fashion.

Now you're clued up on everything you need to know - let's reflect on how all the greatest red carpet outfits looked IRL...
