Vivienne Westwood Calls Michelle Obama's Fashion Sense 'Dreadful'

Vivienne Westwood isn't exactly known for biting her tongue, and in an interview with New York Times' critic Eric Wilson she has turned her critical eye to Michelle Obama. The first lady might have had the seal of approval from Anna Wintour, wear designs by Jason Wu and Thakoon and be America's first lady of fashion, but that doesn't mean she is safe from a Viv-ism.

Westwood clearly can't stand her vibrant All American style as she said: 'Don’t talk about her. It’s dreadful what she wears….I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her.'

She added: 'Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That's what fashion is there for. It's there to help, not just to make you look more conservative.' Ouch.

This isn't exactly the first time Viv has taken a stab at someone's style, as she has trashed Kate Middleton's make up as she said to the Sunday Times Magazine 'The sharp line around her eyes make her look hard. Either she should be smudgy or wear none.'

Viv also said she wanted Kate to recycle her wardrobe revealing: 'I don't have any advice for her, [although] I think it would be great if she wore the same clothes over and again, because that's very good for the environment and it would send out a very nice message. I mean you don't have to have a red outfit one day and then something almost the same in blue the next.' But she said in the interview with the New York Times that she didn't criticize her, she just thinks people should buy less.

The 71 year old is unlikely to stop provoking any time soon and in the interview Viv was a little feisty on a number of subjects. She confessed she was upset that the Metropolitan Museum of Art didn’t take her V&A retrospective: 'I’ll tell you the truth, not that it is a very good idea to tell the truth about things, but I was very cross with the Metropolitan Museum for not taking my retrospective. I think it’s ridiculous.'

She's also so over American journalists as she added 'I’m also rather bored with American journalists…You know, America is an isolated territory, with all those editors who think they are so powerful. Mostly, I think they are rubbish.'
