One of the starriest highlights of London Fashion Week, The Woolmark Prize combined international design talent, a chi chi new hotel venue and the ultimate trio of female fashion power in the form of the prize's three designer judges: Diane Von Furstenberg, Donatella Versace and Victoria Beckham.
Judges: Donatella Versace, Diane Von Furstenburg, Franca Sozzani (Editor Vogue Italia) & Victoria Beckham
Competing for £65,000 in cash and the chance to have their collection stocked in leading fashion boutiques including Harvey Nichols in London and Berdorf Goodman in New York, the six finalists presented six catwalk looks to prove their skills with wool. The ultimate victor was Dutch designer Christian Wijnants whose dip dyed, heavy gauge knit dresses combined a bohemian West Coast vibe with FROW-worthy stand-out appeal.
But the highlight of our evening was undoubtedly the few minutes we managed grab with the formidably talented Mrs Beckham. Now a veteran of 10 successful seasons, Beckham’s place on the Woolmark judging panel further cements her industry cred.
As well as being highly excited about meeting the lady herself, your reporter was struck by the following. Firstly Victoria Beckham has the best eyebrows in town. While Cara’s mahoosive browns may be getting all the press right now, we can tell you that it's Beckham’s lustrous, perfectly angled face framers that deserve the kudos. Secondly VB is impressively articulate on all aspects of fashion and has extensive knowledge of everything from design to manufacture, creativity to wearability – indeed we were told that of the three judges it was Beckham who took the lead in questioning the design nominees. Finally the diminutive designer remains convincingly humble, revealing that she is still so overwhelmed with the positive response to her collections.
So what was her take on winner Christian Wijnants knit-heavy collection and what does the Woolmark Prize mean to her? Check out the snippets below for a teaser of our interview which will be printed in next Tuesday’s issue of Grazia – make sure you snap it up hot of the stands to get the full VB down-low!
Grazia Daily: Why did you want to get involved in the Woolmark Prize?
Victoria Beckham: I love to support young designers and I love the fact that these are designers from all around the world. The Woolmark award is iconic – when you look at the history it is so impressive. For me to be asked to be part of this panel with strong, iconic women like Donatella Versace, Franca Sozzani and obviously Diane… that was a huge compliment and something that is incredibly exciting. I look up to these women and have done for so many years because they are strong as well as talented. For me to be with them is huge and very, very exciting.
Grazia Daily: Did everyone agree on the prizewinner or was it a difficult process to make the decision?
Victoria Beckham: No, we didn’t have any problems on making the decision. What I think is really great about Christian (the winner) is that technically he is really good and there is a strong fashion message there. But it is also very wearable. I think it could really sell. He ticked all of the boxes we were looking for, he really did.
So congratulations to Christian and three cheers for our three fabulous female fashion design judges!
