Gina Gershon's transformation into Donatella Versace - picture, Lifetime
The actress transformation is endlessly fascinating but even more controversial when the said subject is still alive to see the results. The first look of Gina Gershon as Donatella Versace in the upcoming Lifetime movie House of Versace reveals a rather extreme transformation into the peroxide blonde fashion diva.
It’s quite a departure for the gorgeous Brunette actress, pictured below, who spent A LOT of time in the makeup chair. She donned a platinum parted wig, had cotton stuffed under her upper lips for Donatella’s signature pouty look and of course lots of kohl and fake tan. Kathy Kelso, the movie’s makeup artist, did not use prosthetics but applied her blending skills to reshape Gershon’s nose and bone structure using highlighter and shadow.

The portrayal of Donatella’s changing appearance through her tricky takeover of the family business (post Gianni’s murder) is inevitably a sensitive topic to cover: “She goes through an evolution — she physically changes, as we all know, through the years and it was important to be as truthful about that as possible,” Gershon told the New York Post diplomatically. We wonder if the brand will agree?
Remember elfine actress Audrey Tautou’s portrayal of the fabulously coquetteish designer Coco Chanel, in the 2009 Coco Avant Chanel? With her Parisian charm, slight frame and pixie-crop she was seemingly the perfect match for the role. Tautou even took on the role of brand ambassador during the promotion of the movie, appearing in an uber-glam Chanel No 5 ad by the Amelie director, Jeanne-Pierre Jeunet.

Despite her ambassadorship, Chanel’s Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld was quoted, slamming Tautou’s portayal of Coco as ‘unsexy’ and too ‘women’s lib’. Conveniently for him, Lagerfeld preferred his own short movie Once Upon A Time, starring Keira Knightley (also a 'face-of' Chanel perfume, Coco Mademoiselle) as the famed designer: 'Keira had it' Karl said, 'She is a young woman in love, not a spinster.'

Coco is clearly a tough and much-loved cookie to take on in the movie world. Is Donatella as regarded fiercely protected as this, we wonder? How will she enjoy the re-enactment of her most painful moments? It would appear that Gershon has tried to straddle both truthfulness and diplomacy – has she managed it?
House of Versace will air in the US on October 5th – when we can find out!
