To Crop Or Not To Crop? Rooney Mara Leads The A-List Crop Top Fans

15 August 2013 by

To crop or not to crop? That is summer’s most challenging metaphysical question. As Rooney Mara stepped out last night wearing a tummy revealing  top ‘n’ skirt combo from Calvin Klein’s Resort 2014 collection, we were once more swayed towards the crop camp. We’ve been bewitched by Rooney’s torso baring mastery before, indeed the crop is becoming quite the signature for The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo actress.

However, lest we let our Rooney crush cloud our judgement, it’s worth noting that not all crops are created equal. Par example, Rita Ora’s bondage look crop which she paired with matching leather Bermudas didn’t flatter her envy-inducing figure and managed to come off as both try-hard and sweaty.

So how do you guard against coming a cropper with your crop top? The first rule is to make like Rooney and be very selective about what you reveal. Rooney’s crops are always matched with high-waisted skirts, meaning that her navel and hips are well covered up. Far less OTT sexy and much more directional, the ‘hi-driff’ is the only flesh you can flash without alarming the fashion police.

Another successful cropper is Alexa Chung, a woman who is well aware of the perils that lie in navel exposure. AC is a particular fan of the crop shirt which offers another fashion-friendly alternative way into the look. To see who's top of the crops click through the gallery above!
