A Valentino campaign is usually an explosion of candy coloured lace, delicate florals and tulle, using doe-eyed models with romantic braids and porcelain skin - but the house has a new campaign star. Is it Anne Hathaway's new blonde crop? Or Keira Knightley's perfect pout? Nope - it's Terry Richardson's tattooed arm. Uh-huh, Valentino has given inked sleeves a fashwan thumbs up.
It's certainly a surprise to see Maison Valentino teaming up with the provocative photographer who has shot the likes of Kanye West licking Amber Rose's skull and Lindsay Lohan holding a gun in her mouth. Yup, Terry's better known for working with the female form than frothy tulle - his archive of pics is packed with sultry-looking starlets using, err, bananas as props.
Terry Richardson gets the thumbs up from Valentino
But this campaign suggests Valentino is developing a secret love for wacky hipsters. The new face arm of Valentino - usually covered in lumberjack shirts - dangles a pair of studded heels from his little finger and holds up a studded clutch. Eek or chic? You decide.
Either way, now that Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri are at the helm of the Italian house rather than Mr Valentino himself - who retired back in 2007 - the design duo are making the most of breathing new life into the house. Chiuri tells WWD that the campaign captures 'the sensual yet elegant nature of our accessories, described as objects of desire' - and Terry's tattooed arm is the perfect showcase. We think.
