When it debuted on the catwalk, everyone thought Karl Lagerfeld had pulled off his most hilarious joke to date. Now, the bag seems to be moving UP the fashion food chain, from a Kardashian to New York and Milan fashion editors, now it’s on the cover of Vogue Japan.
What’s going on? The traditional way, was that a hot piece would start off on the A-list then slowly trickle down to less amazing celebrities and eventually fall off the radar altogether. The hula hoop bag, Kaiser Karl explained to reporters backstage at the Chanel Spring Summer 13 show - was intended for the beach; large enough for your Chanel towel and even the heftiest of beach reads.
People put good money on the prediction that Anna Dello Russo would be the first to be snapped in the PE-equipment accessory. Well, it turned out that she didn’t wear the thing, although she did keep it in mind for a shoot she styled for Vogue Japan – and now the pesky bag has found its way onto the cover, wielded by lovely supermodel Bette Franke and photographed by Giampaulo Sgura.
How astonishing. Monsieur Lagerfeld has done it again.Click through the gallery above to see the bag’s life cycle –from catwalk to cover.
AND if you’re concerned you might not quite have a spare £1,500 needed to treat yourself to one of the miniature versions in a Chanel boutique then why not take a tip from Alexa Chung and make yourself one...?
