Love them or loathe them, Knee High Gladiator sandals are most definitely back in the fashion spotlight this summer. Adding a saucy hit of va va voom to any bare leg look, the KHG is a definite marmite trend. But that hasn’t stopped an army of A-listers rocking the look both on and off the red carpet.
The KHG comes in two varieties – the flat and the heeled – but both are guaranteed to make major footwear impact. The flat KHG is perhaps marginally easier to wear and can look relatively low-key with a simple skirt and top combo, as seen at Victoria Beckham’s S/S 2013 show. The heeled KHG is more about full-on sex appeal with a fetish feel. Designers including Joseph Atluzarra and Donatella Versace sent their models down the runway in stiletto heeled KHG.
It's little wonder that so many high profile women have decided to try the KHG because red capet style is after all, about standing out from the crowd. From Rita Ora’s criss-cross KHGs to Selena Gomez’ cut out boot version, the style adds a sassy touch to any outfit.
But can you imagine them working for you? There are plenty of KHG on offer from the high street to the high end with Zara’s flat KHGs to Gianvito Roissi’s sky high version available at Net a Porter, so access isn’t the problem. It’s more an issue that the KHG is patently try-hard – there is nothing nonchalant about tying your laces or buckling your straps all the way up to the knee. However, you could argue that fashion is about making an effort, and these KHGs are worth the sweat. So what do you think? Love or loathe?
