When L.K.Bennett announced at the beginning of the year that they had a new muse in the shape of Rosamund Pike, we gave a hearty cheer. The British actress makes the perfect fit for the ladylike brand who counts none other than the Duchess of Cambridge as a fan (you may have seen K-Middy wearing their nude Sledge heels once or twice). But now the collaboration has gone one step further with Rosamund turning her hand to designing her own collection of bags for the retailer.
Grazia Daily met the lovely lady herself at the press unveiling of the 'Rosamund' range. 'It's incredibly nerve-wracking!' the humble star told us, but there was nothing for her to fret about. The boxy leather handbags are simply gorgeous, beautifully made with safety pin zips and the quirky addition of hot pink stitching. The collection is due to hit stores on 17th July and with three styles to choose from - the Rosie, Rosamund and Rosa - we reckon they'll be snapped up quick sharp, by royalty and mere mortals a-like.
Here's what we gleamed from Ms Pike when we sat down for a natter about everything from her obsession with the '60s to the arrival of a certain royal baby...
Rosamund wants to make L.K Bennett sexy
‘This collaboration was an opportunity to have an input and they were open to ideas. They’re not a brand that has a defined look so it’s not like working for Chanel where there is this set image of a Chanel woman and you slot into that. It was up for creation. I wanted it to be allowed to be sexy. I think people think of it as a brand which is classic and ladylike and that can’t be sexy, but I think it absolutely can.'
She wants the bag to be an investment piece
‘I’ve had access to a lot of bags from things I’ve borrowed to things I’ve had as characters to things I’ve owned. I wanted to make a classic bag or a sort of corrupt classic with a bit of punk edge creeping in. Ultimately, I want it to last and bags are investments.’
The designs were inspired by ‘60s film Darling
‘There’s this shot at the beginning of the film that I’m obsessed with. Julie Christie is swinging her bag and she’s so carefree. If you have to hold the bag, you walk in a different way so I wanted a bag that didn’t automatically come with a shoulder strap. It’s that kind of freedom you have when you swing. It’s the woman’s equivalent of spinning around when you’re a little girl and you can’t do that when it’s on your shoulder.’
The zips are a key feature
‘I really wanted the hard ware bits to feel expensive. When you get your first expensive handbag, you see the difference in things like the zips. I thought why can’t we do the zips the same as a really top notch brand? So I really pushed for the quality.'
Rosamund was very nervous to show her designs to the world
'In my job as an actress, I suppose the design element is the script and I’m just the interpreter. I suddenly had this huge feeling of empathy for what designers must feel when they’re putting their creations out. I was so nervous last night imagining you all looking at them. I’ve put a lot of thought into it and a lot of time.'
The handbags represent her
‘The bags are named after me and because my name’s unusual, I wanted them to represent me. It’s not like I could ever disown them. There aren’t many Rosamunds around. I can’t really say it’s the other Rosamund!’
The campaign aims to capture Twiggy’s nonchalance
‘A lot of ‘60s images inspire me and I’ve got images of Twiggy on my phone. At that time, models would do their own make up and hair, which gave the shoots a kind of nonchalance. And that’s what I tried to do in my campaigns for L.K Bennett. I said, “I’m not a model. Why can’t I smile?” I want a woman who people can relate to.’
She approves of Kate Middleton’s footwear
‘I’ve never met her but I hear that she is a massive L.K Bennett fan. The shoes she wears are very comfortable and I have a pair of boots that I wear all the time. I’m very excited about the baby too!’
The bags retail at £425 each and will be available from 17th July in store and on www.lkbennett.com. See Rosamund's red carpet hits in the gallery below...
