Adam Selman is the brains behind many of Rihanna's greatest hits - her crystal carnival bikini, her white Battleship gown, that Victoria's Secret pink lace stage costume and the Vita Coco pineapple bikini. He was also head designer on RiRi's River Island collection and took a bow with her at the end of her London Fashion Week show.
But now Rihanna's secret weapon is going it alone, as he is going to launch his collection on 5 September at New York Fashion Week. The folks over at WWD have got first look at his spring collection, which is as you might expect from Rihanna's right hand man, has an athletic spin. There are hockey jerseys and sweatshirts, as well as slinky slip dresses and robes.
The main inspiration for his collection isn't the good girl gone bad, but the 1981 HBO special on supers called Beautiful Baby, Beautiful and vintage Cosmo covers. He said to WWD: 'It’s sexy. It’s that fantasy woman but it’s also sporty. I really respond to that.' Selman is a fast worker, as he put the collection together in just two months. Rihanna has trained you well.

Selman has a starry client list, as he worked on L.A.M.B and celebrity stadium tours, including Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball and Michael Jackson’s This Is It. He started working with RiRi in 2011 on her Loud tour, but the partnership kept on going as he says: 'And then she just kept calling and calling, ‘Do you want to make me this?’'
Anyone who frequents Rihanna's Instagram will be familiar with Selmans designs, including that Carnival costume she wore in Barbados this summer. Selman spoke about his creation to WWD: 'The crazy thing is that every girl from 18 to 30 is wearing a costume like that. It wasn’t as scandalous as it looks in pictures, but after going and seeing Carnival, the bikini that I first made for her made a lot more sense.'
