When normal folks' motivation to hit the gym flatlines they might splash out on a Tracy Anderson DVD or buy a new set of exercise leggings, but Rick Owens has designed an entire line of men's and women's running shoes to try and get himself in the gym.
The designer reached out to Adidas to design a set of sneaks which will range between £250 to £320 and hit stores in December. The shoes come in one silhouette, with six styles for men and four for women using leather, suede, nylon and canvas. The sneaks have a strict 'Rick Owens colour palette' of black, white, grey, pearl and bone - with a flash of yellow on women's trainers.
Rick Owens said: 'I work out like a fiend but I hate, hate, hate cardio. I realised I’m in my fifties now and I need to do something for my heart and lungs. So, I’ve got to start running. I thought to myself, ‘What shoes am I going to wear running?’ I can’t wear my big chunky basketball shoes — I’d look like a dinosaur running through the Tuileries.'
Rick Owen's basketball high tops
These won't be flashy, novel trainers, like Jeremy Scott's wings, as even the three-stripe Adidas logo is only hinted at in perforations. We're expecting an assortment of signature Rick Owens monochrome geometric patterns, with luxe leather. His collections may not be sporty in an obvious way, but have a slouchy, cool New York vibe with racer back vests and slit, draped maxi skirts.
This won't be the first time that Rick Owens has designed a sneaker, as he has created chunky basketball high-top with white soles. They're a meaty, leather Chuck Taylor. Rick said to WWD about the cult shoes: 'When I did my basketball shoes it was all about style. But for these running shoes, I wanted them to be technically really good and I want people to be able to run in them.'
Owens added: 'I’m not great at collaboration — I get too anal, too detail-oriented and impatient. It’s very innocent on my part — I’m not trying to provoke anyone but it ends up being a mess. But Adidas is a classic brand and it reminds me of Eighties hip-hop. They just have an authentic, old-school realness that appeals to me.' We're sure it'll appeal to others too, as Owens has a habit of creating cult classics.
The exact design of the shoe has been kept under wraps, as it will be debuted in Rick Owens men's show in Paris on June 27. Until then take a look at some of his greatest style hits in the gallery below to get an idea of what we could expect from a Rick Owens running shoe.
