The big shocker on the Oscars Awards red carpet? Anne Hathaway wearing Prada despite being a long-time fan of Valentino. She's often worn his feminine, frothy creations to awards ceremonies in the past and picked his frothy creation to get married in, plus let's not forget these two are such good friends, they've even holidayed together. In fact, Valentino was so convinced that the Italian brand sent a press release prior to the event revealing she would be wearing Valentino. Oops.
Rumours emerged on Monday that she didn't wear the Valentino gown she planned to because it was too similar to the Alexander McQueen dress which Amanda Seyfried wore (and you voted as the best frock). Anne has now publically apologised for the whole ditching Valentino-for-Prada drama, admitting that it was indeed to avoid a matchy-matchy red carpet moment.
'It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans,' the Oscar-winning actress said in a statement to WWD. 'Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused.'
Is this the Valentino dress Anne was due to wear?
We've been racking our brains and think that this is the first time that a star has EVER apologised for their red carpet gown or justified a last minute dress swap. Right? We change our outfits a million times before a big night out, and c'mon this is the Oscars, so a last minute change of heart must happen all the time.
We reckon the other dress was Amanda Seyfried's, although WWD wager a guess that it was Jennifer Aniston’s red strapless Valentino dress which caused the dress-a-rama. As they said, 'It wasn’t clear how news of the other dress came to Hathaway’s attention, but a good guess is that it was a source close to home: Jennifer Aniston, who is also repped by [Hathaway's rep Stephen] Huvane, wore a red strapless Valentino gown to the ceremony.' One thing's for sure - Ms Hathaway does love her red Valentino gowns...
Valentino and Anne Hathaway at the Oscars, 2011
Valentino must have been a bit disappointed that his friend Anne didn't pick up her Oscar in Valentino. As he has an amazing track record of dressing previous Oscar winners, as Best Actress winners Cate Blanchett, Sophia Loren, Jessica Lange, Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Taylor all wore Valentino on their big night. But we're sure Anne's pal Valentino is touched by her apology and she will be back in his couture in no time at all.
