Our cover star for our Christmas double issue, Laura Carmichael is a seriously stylish lady indeed. Living with the somewhat dowdy image of Lady Edith following her everywhere, the Downton Abbey star shows exactly how much fashion prowess she has every time she hits the red carpet.

Laura’s style is distinctively English in taste: relatively refined, no unfussy accessories and a double dose of directional labels. Whilst her on-screen look revolves around a jolly good set of family pearls Laura ‘real life’ wardrobe couldn’t be further from Grantham. Laura entered the style sphere with a bang when she appeared at the Met Ball in 2012 wearing Emila Wickstead. The regal blue dress split to reveal a matching pair of trousers, providing an updated version of period dressing, showed that whilst Laura may nod to the era which made her famous she will not be a style slave to it.

Indeed Laura is fashion pals with THE It London designer, Christopher Kane who regularly lends a helping hand for her red carpet appearances. From her most recent appearance on the Watch What Happens Live show in New York wearing the label’s cruise collection to swaggering around The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup in Kane’s ultramodern florals back in July 2012, Christopher Kane and Laura Carmichael seem like a match made in fashion heaven. Laura’s fash-pals don’t stop there, Katie Grand has shot the star for Love magazine two times and she counts the master of floral fashion, Erdem as a close friend. Yet despite having so many expert eyes on style speed dial the actress still styles herself which is something to be praised in an era where the celebrities who regularly hit the best dressed lists tend to have enlisted the help of an army of stylists.

However nothing quite spells out the much banded about term, fashion icon, than wearing Marc Jacob’s barely-there underwear as outerwear Louis Vuitton dress which is exactly what Laura did when she attended this year’s Met Ball in May. If anyone was in any doubt before, the dress displayed Laura as one seriously stylish lady.

Take a look at our pick of Laura’s best red carpet looks in the gallery above.
