As for the funeral, it will be held on Monday, 13th May in the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, Gallarate. Rosita, Ottavio and Margherita Missoni in Missoni Advertising Campaign

News has reached Grazia Daily that Ottavio Missoni, the founder of the Italian Missoni label and retired Olympic hurdler has passed away at home in the town of Sumirago at the age of 92 surrounded by his family. Ottavio, known as ‘Tai’ to his family, was the patriarch of the Missoni clan, and married Rosita Missoni in 1953. In the same year, the couple founded the Missoni label which soon became famed for its iconic knitwear.

Born in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 1921, Missoni famously represented Italy in the 400m hurdles at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. The Olympic romance between Ottavio and Rosita – the soon to be Mrs Missoni was studying in the capital when Ottavio came to town to compete and the pair met under the Eros statue in Piccadilly – has become part of the Missoni legend.

With generations of Missonis living and working together, the close family network has become central to the Missoni brand. The whole family including Ottavio were captured together in a series of fashion adverts shot by Jurgen Teller. Ottavio was father to three children, Luca, the creative director of the brand, Angela, who designs both the men’s and womenswear collections and Vittorio, the former CEO of the brand who tragically disappeared earlier this year off the coast of Venezuela. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren including Margerhita Missoni, the 30 year old ex-model who oversees Missoni’s handbags.

The family are yet to announce funeral plans. All our thoughts are with the Missoni family as they mourn the passing of a fashion legend.
