Madonna as Marie Antoinette [@Madonna/ @EvaCiccone]
She's been called the Queen of Reinvention, credited with inspiring a younger generation of pop stars from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga, but this weekend Madonna channeled another iconic female as she celebrated her 55th birthday. The singer took on the role of French Queen Marie Antoinette to host a decadent bash at a chateau in the South of France. Sticking to the French Revolution theme, her Madgesty wore a curly blonde wig, purple embellished corset and heart shaped eye patch as she posed for photos with friends, including boyfriend Brahim Zaibat who she is seen straddling in the Instagram photo above.

Of course, you can't play Marie Antoinette without eating some cake, and Madonna hired luxury French bakery Ladurée' to cater the event, which culminated in the revelation of an extravagant pink cake covered in candles. The star clearly indulged as she shared a pic with her followers and revealed, "Perhaps we had too much Cale! But at my Birthday Party all I could see was LOVE", before adding, "Perhaps I had too much Champagne! I meant to write CAKE!"

Guests, including Madonna's beau, fully embraced the fancy dress requirement with masks and fans galore. Inside the party was a white piano while in the garden a quilted bar - fully stocked with spirits - became the centrepiece.
Girls Aloud - 'I Can't Speak French'
Madonna isn't the first A-lister to take her style cues from Marie Antoinette. Kirsten Dunst famously played the royal in the Sofia Coppola's colourful biopic while Anna Dello Russo stepped out at a masked ball hosted by Dolce & Gabbana earlier this year with a miniature boat on her head. Alexa Chung once played a beheaded queen for Halloween and Girls Aloud starred as a group of wannabe courtesans in the video for their single I Can't Speak French.
