1. Zombie Boy

Nicola Formichetti discovered Zombie Boy (Rick Genest or ‘Rico’). With skeletal tattoos covering the majority of his body, he became the face of MUGLER’s first menswear campaign which was released in January 2011. The next month Rico starred in Lady Gaga’s Born This Wayvideo.

2. Gaga Storms The Debut

Formichetti’s womenswear debut at the newly rebranded MUGLER for A/W 2011 was the hottest ticket in town. Of course, that had something to do with the presence of MUGLER’s most famous client, Lady Gaga, who stalked the catwalk wearing two of Mugler’s body-morphic creations while smoking.

3. Nicopanda

Formichetti launched the Nicopanda line in a pop-up shop in New York in September 2011. Based on a panda cartoon that looks like him, the range of products from i-Pod cases to tees was an instant cult success. More pop-ups followed in Tokyo the following year, stocking the Nicopanda x Hello Kitty collaboration.

4. MUGLER DNA

While his second collection for MUGLER failed to generate such hype, Formichetti continued to experiment with the brand’s DNA bringing plenty of otherworldly charm (and green lipstick) to the catwalk.

5. A-List Fans

MUGLER has become an A-list favourite with actresses and starlets alike clamouring to work Formichetti’s designs on the red carpet. Above are some of our favourites.

6. The MUGLER Look

Formichetti’s collections win rave reviews with editor’s praising the maturity of his collections. From the furred cocoon shapes for A/W 2012 to the chic grown up volumes for A/W 2013, Formichetti has created an immediately recognisable handwriting for the label.

7. Lady Gaga's Bum Bag

For Spring 2013, Formichetti designed a collection of handbags, one of which was modelled on Lady Gaga’s bum.

8. Styling Kim Kardashian

In between his styling and designing commitments, Formichetti continues to work in editorial. Earlier this year he created headlines by styling Kim Kardashian for Elle, and admitting that it had been difficult to get clothes for her because designers didn’t want to lend to the reality star.
