It's been five months since the Stylist/ Art Director/ Designer/ Digital Marketing Extraordinaire Nicola Formichetti took up his position as Artistic Director at Diesel. Known for his styling collaboration with Lady Gaga – who could forget that meat dress – Nicola is one of this generation’s most feted image makers. Now he’s bringing his particular brand of high-low style to the Diesel denim label complete with street casting campaigns, digital advertising images lensed by Nick Knight on an iPhone and an initial capsule collection of ‘Tribute’ pieces that recall the spirit of Diesel in the 90's.
Diesel's Tokyo Accessories Launch Party
To celebrate the fledgling steps in his Diesel career, Nicola alongside the brand’s founder Renzo Rosso, threw an outrageous X-rated party in his hometown of Tokyo on Friday night. Taking inspiration from his edited S/S 2014 accessories lines – one entitled ‘bullet’, the other inspired by Japanese shibari rope and named ‘bondage’ - Nicola mined Japanese underground erotic culture to conjure a soiree bursting with sensuality. From latex wearing girls circling on roof-high poles, to stiletto-soled girl fight clubs, everywhere you turned you saw a vision of saucy glamour.

“Erotica is such a great feeling,” laughs Nicola when we ask him why he went for such a full-on theme. “With accessories especially, you need to have a smell, a dream around them – what I’m trying to do is create stories.”

Nicola also wanted to take the opportunity to introduce us to his new muse and face for the collection’s bag: “I met this amazing singer called Brooke Candy a couple of months ago and I was like, she’s awesome - she could be an amazing face for the bag,” Nicola explains. “She’s my new muse, I’m a big fan of hers, she is really inspiring me right now. She has that thing, like when I first met Gaga, that very raw feeling.”

Party guests including a Diesel-clad Georgia May Jagger were treated to a taste of Brooke’s talents as she performed at the show. “With Brooke I can see the potential is there, Nicola continues. “People hate her or love her – it was the same thing with Gaga at the beginning, so many people said to me ‘why are you working with her?’"

As for the party, was Nicola pleased with the results? “Japanese people are crazy, but then you add in some of the Diesel crazy and the ideas are incredible. I want to break all the rules and blow everyone's minds. One thing's for sure - peopele are certainly never gonna forget it!”
