UPDATE: Nicki Minaj has spoken out about her dramatic makeunder. The singer's swapped candy-coloured wigs for chic LBDs in recent weeks, heading the MTV Movie Awards in a classic Alexander McQueen number. She told MTV that paring things down is the new way to shock, saying that she's 'come full circle'.
'I went so far to the other side that there's only one place to go from there,' Minaj told MTV. 'You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, 'Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing nothing will shock them even more.'
The hip hop's done the same with her music, ditching her theatrical 'Starships' pop sound and returning to her rap roots on her third studio album, currently titled 'The Pink Print'.
'The tracks on [my next album] are back to my hip-hop roots. And I don't think it's something that I'm necessarily trying to do. As soon as I started working on my new album, that's just the songs that I've been writing,' she said.

14 April 2014: We LOVE Nicki Minaj's dramatic make under for the the MTV Movie Awards last night! The rapper hit the red carpet without the big lashes, bright lips and cray outfits she's known for.
Most stars use the event as a chance to sport something a little more colourful or risqué than they'd don for other red carpet events. Take Lupita Nyong'o who swapped her Cinderella style baby blue Oscars gown for multicoloured body con or Jessica Alba who stepped out in a pastel crop top and skater skirt combo. Instead, Nicki went for a super natural look for the event.
Sporting a black floor length Alexander McQueen gown with arm jewellery by the designer the singer looked elegant and uber chic. Even her make-up and hair was kept au natural. Winged liner was teamed with perfect skin, groomed dark locks and nude lip gloss.
It's the latest sign that Nicki's decided to switch to a more grown-up look. The singer who used to shock in her videos on the red carpet with multicoloured wigs and skimpy hemlines has been little-by-little paring down her image over the past year. She even shared a no-makeup selfie on Instagram last month.

It seems for stars known for their outlandish looks, the best way to make a statement is to ditch the cartoon-like image. Lady Gaga got fans talking last year when she shared a snap of her bare face on site Little Monsters and opted for a *totally* normal dress to be her best friend's bridesmaid.
PLUS while Miley Cyrus used to shock by stripping off, social media gets all excited when she puts her clothes back on now - case in point her Marc Jacobs campaigns, which show her sporting floorlength skirts, knits and barely-there make-up.
