Mulberry Muses: Emma Hill's A-List Fans On Why They Love The Designer's Creations

10 June 2013 by

This morning big fash news broke, as Emma Hill announced that she is leaving Mulberry after being creative director at the brand since September 2008. Em brought us pooches on the catwalk and magical other-worldly catwalk shows thanks to Mr Tim Walker. She also made us crave Mulberry leather, with her collection of lust worthy it-bags. But arguably her biggest legacy will be her A list following, as everyone from Kate Middleton to Kate Moss have worn her designs.

Hill successfully turned her muses into big business, with must-have handbags named after her fans such as the Alexa and the Del Ray. With Hill at the helm the FROW was flooded with A Listers including Mossy, Alexa, Olivia Palermo, Juno Temple, Kristen Stewart and Lana Del Rey. To enter into the magical Tim Walker Mulbs land, you needed more than just an invite, as a hunk of Mulberry leather loveliness in hand was a front row must.

The Mulberry slot is always circled in red ink in Grazia Daily's London Fashion Week diary, and over the years we have chatted with Kate Moss on the FROW and rubbed shoulders with K Stew among the toadstools and giant butterflies. Find out what the Mulberry muses have said about Emma Hill's fine work for the label below....

Alexa Chung on Mulberry...

The Chungster said to GD about her very own Mulbs, the Alexa: ‘It’s such an honour. I had no idea they were doing it until they presented it to me. I asked if I could get involved with the design process and they said no! I’ve always carried around a men’s Mulberry briefcase that’s totally battered and they’ve taken inspiration from that apparently.’ It's been four years and we still dream about having a buttery, Alexa swinging from our shoulder...

Kate Moss on Mulberry...

Back in September backstage at Mulberry we made our way over to Mossy and asked her if she could have a 'Kate Moss' Mulbs bag, which would she pick. 'This one!' the super said excitedly, holding up a black snakeskin clutch adorned with that iconic Mulberry lock. 'I want this one to be the Mulberry Moss bag but it’s not, it’s a Willow. But I love this one because it doubles as a clutch. It’s genius.' Agreed.

Lana Del Rey on Mulberry...

In February 2012, at the Autumn Winter 2012 show, we spoke to Lana Del Rey about how her Mulberry bag came about. She said about the flap-over, ladylike semi-structured tote: ‘I’m just very honoured. I was talking to [Mulberry Creative Director] Emma Hill and she had started listening to my record six months ago and she really loved it, just for herself. And I think we related to each other because I try and keep a lot of integrity and I don’t compromise lyrically or sonically, and I think she feels the same way when she’s designing, so hoped we could do something together.’

While clutching her white ostrich skin and gold it-bag, Lana added: 'Emma knew that I really only wear white and gold on the stage, and I kind of like all things exotic, so here’s my white ostrich bag…and then you might have seen a couple [more] bags on the runway? So yes, it’s really special’.

So will Emma's powerful contacts travel along with her to her next move (whatever that may be) or will she stay loyal to Mulbs? We'll have to wait till next LFW to find out, but for now see all the members of the Emma Hill x Mulberry fan club in the gallery above...
