Four years ago Michelle Obama provided Jason Wu with a career defining moment when she wore a single shouldered white creation by the designer to her husband President Obama's first inauguration ball. Last night the First Lady made Wu's dreams come true once again by giving another of his custom gowns an inaugural outing.
Mobama teamed the show-stopping red dress with a handmade diamond ring by Kimberly McDonald and Jimmy Choo shoes. As well as opting for a far sexier look than for the 2009 ball, the mother-of-two who spent the evening beaming at Barak's side also showcased her sleek new ‘do which was first unveiled on her birthday last week.
Wu told WWD “Mrs. Obama likes to keep her secrets. She surprised me again. She’s really good at it. I was so nervous. You’d think I wouldn’t be since I’d experienced it before but I really was.” Talking about the decision to create a red dress for the First Lady he said “Like last time, I had to go with my gut. I instinctively had to think of the woman in the dress. After four years in office, I thought the country was ready to see a confident First Lady in red. It just felt right.”
Michelle has worn a string of predominantly US designers for the inaugural celebrations over the last few days including J. Crew, Brooks Brothers and Michael Kors. Her dazzling ruby-red custom woven faille coupé Jason Wu dress will now be donated to the National Archives.
