Not since Jackie O has a First Lady become such a focus for fashion press and the media in general – wowing time after time with her elegant outfit choices that are experimental, appropriate and completely mixed in terms of price range, as well as having the best First arms we’ve ever laid eyes on – or as the Vogue interviewer for what is her second cover of the American magazine describes her - “she has inspired a modern definition of effortless American chic.”

Wearing a blue and burgundy sleeveless Reed Krakoff dress, Mrs O was shot by superstar photographer Annie Leibovitz, a woman known for her huge-scale theatrical fashion shoots. In the interview, Michelle talks at length about upgrading her husband’s non-chalant dress sense, as well as a bit about her own style, “I always say that women should wear whatever makes them feel good about themselves. That’s what I always try to do. . . . I also believe that if you’re comfortable in your clothes it’s easy to connect with people and make them feel comfortable as well. In every interaction that I have with people, I always want to show them my most authentic self.”

Both Barack and Michelle Obama were interviewed in the issue by Jonathan Van Meter, who was was privy to all of the photo-shoot action in The White House on the day. “Who picked the music? I love this song.” The President said during the shoot as Leibovitz played the Black Eyed Peas song Where Is the Love? to get them in the modelling mood. It seems even the photographer herself, who has photographed all of the hugest stars of our time, was hugely taken in by the couple, telling them “There’s a lot of huggin’ going on…you’re a very different kind of president and First Lady.”
It seems the couple are also masters of banter, and quite the hilarious two-some. While Michelle was explaining that they stay in so much because they want to spend time with their young daughters, Barack butted in fully grinning with “Although, as I joked at a press conference, now that they want less time with us, who knows? Maybe you’ll see us out in the clubs.” “Saturday night!” says the First Lady. “The kids are out with their friends. Let’s go party!” “‘The Obamas are out in the club again?’ ” says the president, laughing. “Let’s put it this way: I did an awful lot of socializing in my teens and 20s.” And, we fall in love all over again.
